Books We Read : The Berenstain Bears Don't Pollute (Anymore)

This week we chose to discuss the book The Berenstain Bears Don't Pollute (Anymore) (First Time Books(R)). The motive behind choosing this book is my discussion with Liya last week about the pollution in our country. Since she is very much concerned about doing something for the environment or worried about the country losing its face over dirty trashes, we decided to do something together.

What's in the book? It's all about preserving the environment and teaches kids about its importance and what can they do themselves. It also tells how adults go neglectful at times and how kids can intervene and make them think big and bring in changes. Liya was sad to learn how badly it affects fishes, duck and many more waterborne lives when we liter river, ponds etc. How sad it is to cut down trees as that alter the habitat of birds etc and again going to affect us- the humans, as well.

The book presents how neglectful had been cubs' dad in preserving environment and been cutting down trees carelessly. He did not really gave a thought about planting a tree to replace every single one he cuts down.  At the end, the cubs along with their friends were able to enlighten the adults about the dangers of littering Bear Country.  They formed an earth-savers club and did something for their environment, which is a great learning for kids of all ages, I am sure.

Negative Side: Very wordy, not really a read aloud book for toddlers etc. Some words are too hard to digest for little ones. Really not a "first timer" book as it claims.  I found the video version much simpler than the book.

Videos on the book:  These are slightly different from the book– story-wise, yet message remains the same. Liya loved it and we did some activities around the book. Worth watching!

Don't pollute drawing:

Liya did a drawing on the "littered country". Here is the drawing. Some of the things she counted in are - popcorn bags, plastic bags, chips covers, spoilt veggies, ice cream cups etc.

  2. I love her drawing! It does look like its not so suitable as a book for the very young children but those a little older who are starting to read and learn more, it looks good

  3. Definitely seems like a good book for older children....We need to teach them about pollution so they can try to look after the world better than our generation!
